Beats or Message?
I love singing but I cannot sing to save my life, and I have made peace with that. So, I have resigned myself to just listening, singing in the bathroom, or along to the music (when I am in a good mood, lol). Interestingly, most of the songs I have on replay, often have a story attached to them. However, it was not always so. This is how it started
In high school those attending Christian Union were allowed to hold two services on Sundays. in the morning and afternoon. The morning one was just the normal service but the afternoon one had a difference because one, most of the preachers came from Nairobi, or as they call it nowadays, kanairo. Therefore, they entertained and ministered to us in equal measures. After the service, when there was time, the CU patron, allowed us to listen to gospel music using CU's speakers. Therefore, one Sunday as we were listening to Women of Faith's I Am Trading My Sorrows, a friend asked me what that song meant to me. At first, I was at a loss because I had been listening to the song without seeking to understand the Word in it. After fumbling a little, I managed to let her know what I thought of it. That, like in business, we were to trade our issues with Jesus' peace which He so readily has availed to us.
From then, I often listen to what the song has to say and not just the beat. That is why any of the songs on my replay has a story, and hopefully, in this series, I can share those stories. What attracts you to listen to a song? Beats or the message?
